The Technology

What is MBBR?

MBBR stands for Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor — an advanced biological process developed to improve the efficiency, stability and capacity of conventional activated-sludge systems.

It uses specially engineered plastic biofilm carriers that stay suspended within an aeration tank, providing an enormous protected surface area on which beneficial microorganisms grow naturally. As wastewater passes through, these microorganisms consume and break down organic pollutants before the treated water moves to the next stage.

Unlike conventional systems where microorganisms remain suspended in water, MBBR lets biomass attach to moving carriers — resulting in significantly higher biological activity and treatment efficiency, and combining the advantages of activated-sludge and fixed-film technologies without their usual limitations.

The Process

How does MBBR work?

The MBBR process is based on nature’s own biological treatment mechanism. Millions of beneficial microorganisms form a thin biofilm on specially designed carrier media, feeding on organic pollutants, dissolved contaminants and nutrients in the wastewater.

Preliminary Treatment

Incoming wastewater passes through screening and equalization to remove large solids, grit and debris.

Biological Treatment

In the MBBR tank, thousands of floating carriers are continuously mixed by aeration — the attached biomass consumes BOD, COD, ammonia nitrogen, organic matter and nutrients.

Biofilm Growth & Regeneration

As bacteria grow, older layers detach and are replaced by new active microorganisms — a self-regulating process that keeps treatment stable.

Secondary Clarification

Detached biomass is separated from the treated water in a clarification stage before discharge or reuse — delivering consistently excellent performance.
