Wastewater Technology

Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

High-rate clarification that floats out suspended solids, fats, oils and grease with a blanket of micro-bubbles — fast, and in a compact footprint.

Clarify tough effluent in minutes, not hours

DAF removes the light, hard-to-settle solids that gravity clarifiers struggle with — lifting flocs, oils and fibres to the surface for skimming. CWG has built high-rate DAF and Turbo-DAF units for textile, food and beverage plants across Pakistan, handling flows from a few to hundreds of cubic metres an hour.

The Technology

What is a DAF clarifier?

Dissolved Air Flotation dissolves air into water under pressure, then releases it into the effluent as a cloud of micro-bubbles that attach to coagulated solids and float them to the surface.

The floated sludge is skimmed off the top while clarified water is drawn from below — achieving high solids and FOG removal in a small, high-rate tank.

With coagulation and flocculation ahead of it, DAF handles the low-density solids, colour and emulsified oils typical of textile and food-industry effluent.

The Process

How a DAF clarifier works

Chemically conditioned effluent meets a stream of micro-bubbles that carry contaminants to the surface for removal.

1

Coagulation & Flocculation

Coagulant and polymer bind fine solids, oils and colour into larger, floatable flocs.

2

Air Saturation

A portion of clarified water is saturated with air under pressure in a saturation vessel.

3

Flotation

Released micro-bubbles attach to the flocs and float them into a surface blanket.

4

Skimming & Clarified Draw-off

The float is skimmed to sludge handling while clear water is drawn from the base.

Advantages

Why industries prefer MBBR

High-Rate Clarification

Treats large flows in a compact tank — minutes of retention, not hours.

Excellent FOG Removal

Floats out fats, oils and grease that gravity settling leaves behind.

Handles Light Solids

Ideal for low-density textile and food solids that won’t settle.

Small Footprint

High surface loading means a plant that fits where space is tight.

Thick Float Sludge

Surface float is drier than settled sludge, easing dewatering.

Robust & Proven

A workhorse pre-treatment for CWG’s biggest industrial clients.

Applications

How It Compares

DAF vs conventional clarification

vs Gravity Clarifier

Removes light solids and FOG that simply won’t settle — in a fraction of the footprint.

vs Sand Filtration

Handles high solids and oily loads that would quickly blind a media filter.

vs Plain Skimming

Coagulation plus micro-bubbles capture emulsified oils basic skimmers miss.

Local Relevance

Why DAF matters for Pakistan

Pakistan’s textile, denim and food industries produce high-colour, oily, hard-to-settle effluent. High-rate DAF is often the most effective, space-efficient first stage — protecting downstream biology and helping plants meet NEQS limits.
