Sludge Dewatering

Screw Press Systems

Continuous, low-energy, low-noise sludge dewatering that runs quietly around the clock — with minimal wash water and maintenance.

Continuous dewatering that runs itself

A screw press dewaters sludge continuously and automatically, using a slow-turning screw to squeeze water out as sludge moves along it. Enclosed, quiet and frugal on power and wash water, it’s an ideal fit for small-to-medium STPs and ETPs that want hands-off, all-day dewatering. CWG supplies and integrates screw presses to suit your sludge.

The Technology

What is a screw press?

A screw press uses a slowly rotating screw inside a cylindrical screen. Flocculated sludge enters one end; as the screw carries it forward, the space narrows and pressure rises, squeezing water out through the screen.

Filtrate drains away while a firm cake is continuously discharged at the far end — no batches, no stop-start. The low rotation speed means low energy, low noise and very little wear.

Its enclosed design contains odour and needs only occasional, low-volume screen washing — making it one of the easiest dewatering systems to live with.

The Process

How a screw press works

Flocculated sludge is continuously conveyed and compressed along the screw, releasing filtrate and discharging a dry cake.

1

Flocculation

Sludge is flocculated so water separates cleanly during pressing.

2

Conveying

A slow screw moves the sludge through the screen cylinder.

3

Compression

The narrowing pitch raises pressure, squeezing water out through the screen as filtrate.

4

Cake Discharge

A firm cake is continuously discharged at the outlet for disposal.

Advantages

Why industries prefer MBBR

Continuous & Automatic

Runs unattended around the clock — no batch cycles.

Very Low Energy

Slow rotation means minimal power draw.

Low Noise & Odour

Enclosed, gentle operation keeps the plant pleasant.

Little Wash Water

Needs far less washing than a belt press.

Low Maintenance

Few, slow-moving parts mean long service intervals.

Compact

A small, self-contained footprint for tight plant rooms.

How It Compares

Screw press vs other dewatering

vs Filter Press

Continuous and low-effort; the filter press wins on ultimate cake dryness for heavy sludges.

vs Belt Press

Uses far less wash water and runs quieter, in an enclosed unit.

vs Centrifuge

Much lower energy and noise, with simpler maintenance.

Local Relevance

Why screw presses suit Pakistan

For the many small and medium plants that can’t justify a full dewatering hall or constant operator attention, the screw press offers continuous, low-cost sludge handling that simply runs — saving power, water and labour.
