Every treatment plant produces sludge, and hauling wet sludge is expensive. A filter press presses that sludge into a firm, high-solids cake — slashing volume, weight and disposal cost — while returning clear filtrate to the plant. The Technology

What is a filter press?

A plate-and-frame filter press forces conditioned sludge between a series of filter-cloth-covered plates. Water passes through the cloth as clear filtrate while solids build up as a cake in the chambers.

As the chambers fill and pressure rises, the cake is compressed to a high dryness. The plates then open and the dewatered cake drops out for disposal or reuse.

It’s a batch process that delivers the driest cake of any common dewatering technology — ideal where disposal is charged by weight or volume.

How a filter press works

Conditioned sludge is pumped into the press, dewatered under rising pressure, then released as a dry cake.

Sludge Conditioning

Sludge is conditioned (often with polymer or lime) to release water more readily.

Chamber Filling

Feed pumps push sludge into the chambers between the filter plates.

Pressing & Dewatering

Rising pressure squeezes water through the cloths as filtrate; solids compact into a cake.

Cake Release

The plates separate and the firm, dry cake drops out for disposal or recovery.
